Sony’s Hideaki Nishino has announced that a significant system software update for PlayStation 5 consoles will be released tomorrow, bringing a slew of new capabilities to the next-gen machine.
They include the long-awaited option to connect an M.2 SSD to the PS5 for storage expansion, enabling users to store many more games than the system’s meager internal storage allows. The PS5 only has 667 GB of useable free storage, which isn’t much considering titles like Hitman 3 and Destiny 2 can take up more than 100 GB.
Important: M.2 SSDs must satisfy the performance and size specifications listed on this page. Using an M.2 SSD also necessitates efficient heat dissipation through a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that matches the required dimensions. Before buying any M.2 SSD or cooling structure for usage with PS5, please read the page mentioned above carefully.
The latest PS5 system update also includes a unique function that allows you to listen to 3D audio via your TV’s built-in speakers. Players may turn their TV’s stereo speakers into a three-dimensional audio system after analyzing the acoustics of their home using the DualSense wireless controller’s microphone.

Fans and developers alike have praised the PS5’s 3D audio capability, which can be accessed through compatible headphones. In addition to the headset support that’s been available since launch, we’re excited to bring this feature to life for players directly via their built-in TV speakers.
Users of the PS5 will also notice improvements to the user interface as well as additional gaming and social experience customizations when they install the latest system update. When PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game are installed on the same system, they will now show separately in the Game Library’s “Installed” tab and on the Home screen. The platform is now clearly shown by the tiles.
